The crisis reactor Fukushima Daiichi has been upgraded to a 7 on the international scale of nuclear events. This is the same rating as Chernobyl. It is interesting to me, though, how can these two events share the same assessment, but still very different in some important points.
Chernobyl published, for example, much more radioactive material (Fukushima published only 1 / 10 of the radioactive Chernobyl issue) in a much shorter period of time. The slower pace of Fukushima, combined with the Japanese Government more open and responsive approach means less significant health impacts so far were caused by Fukushima.
But the differences do not all work in Fukushima's fallen. It is likely to take longer to this crisis under control, and Fukushima cleanup crews have come up with much contaminated water, was not present in Chernobyl. Therefore, it is possible that these two disasters similar, as they do now could look over the long term vision.
