I have several different explanations here describe such as earthquakes and tsunamis work published. This week, but the Miller-McCune CURIOUSER and CURIOUSER podcast this general information and it does a nice job of application specifically on Japan. First, they are talking about the common things - plate tectonics and why earthquakes happen. Then they sprechen-the earthquake and tsunami of the Tōhoku and play as the General facts of real disasters.
On Wednesday, 9 March, two days before the main event, there was an earthquake of magnitude of 7.2 on the plate boundary East of Japan under the Pacific Ocean. This part of Japan Gets all few decades not the main thing but still a very large earthquake, the art. This time however very bad. Part of the Pacific plate was glue and shifted suddenly under Japan. Which part of the move are still much larger part of the Pacific really put more load on the disk, which was still really - and two days later, the tribe was too much. On 11 March, a huge range of the Pacific plate, perhaps 300 km long and broke free and went to the West under Japan - about 120 ft of the movement, all at once. At the same time, the Japan plate is moved east of 9 feet.
If you tsunami description you want to continue the Tohoku, it begins at about 2: 50 in the podcast
